The first (and likely apocryphal) is that "IV" is a representation for "Ivpiter", or Jupiter, the supreme Roman god, and that people were afraid to invoke his name on timepieces. The real reason is aesthetics: watchmakers want to keep an approximate vertical symmetry in symbol width, and "IIII" is at better parity with "VIII" than "IV". As for "correctness" of IV versus IIII, Roman numerals weren't standardized until long after the ancient Romans. Use of forms like "IIII" and "IIX" (for 8) and "IC" (for 99) was fairly common and, at times, preferred. It's a modern convention that there's only "one correct way" to write Roman numerals. The four should be IV, not IIII. It saddens me that such a pricey watch could have such a sorrowful mistake.
